What To Do About Earthquakes,
Radiation and More

Dear friends,

Crises come and go. It’s how you handle the crisis that defines your self-worth.

As my yoga teacher, Yogi Bhajan, said, “Life without crisis exists in a coffin”. And, “It’s not the life that matters but the courage you bring to it”.

Preparedness is the key. When you know what to do and who to contact ahead of a crisis, life becomes much simpler and less worrisome. When you have the proper tools to utilize during and after a crisis, recovery is easier.

With the seemingly increasing frequency of earth changes like earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes, tornadoes, other weather changes, and now nuclear radiation, it’s important to be prepared physically, mentally and spiritually.

In this newsletter, I've included information and links to meditations, foods and herbs to help you through crises after they happen and to help sensitize you to them before crises happen. Let me know how these tips help you fare over the next few months.

Should you take Potassium Iodide?

If you’re exposed to radioactivity there are various isotopes to be aware of.  Radioactive Iodine negatively affects your thyroid gland and can cause permanent damage. Taking Potassium Iodide “fills up” your Iodine receptor sites in your thyroid, effectively preventing the radioactive form from attaching.

Government agencies, including the FDA and CDC recommend taking Potassium Iodide to prevent damage to your thyroid if exposed to radiation.  However, they do not recommend taking it unless there is a direct exposure. Too high of doses of Iodine, even the good kind, can also injure the thyroid. It is recommended to follow the advice of these government agencies about when and if Potassium Iodide is necessary.

What Can I Take to Help Prevent Thyroid Issues?

Even though I am not a nuclear radiation expert, I believe common sense must come into play. Over the years I've written about the differences in philosophy about allopathic medicine (MD medicine) and holistic medicine. When there is an emergency, allopathic medicine excels in saving lives. Holistic medicine is more about utilizing the body’s inherent healing capabilities to affect recovery.

Holistic medicine says that given healthy, whole, unprocessed foods, the body will have the raw materials it needs to get healthy and stay healthy. So my suggestion for potential radiation exposure, even at minimal “safe” levels, is to eat foods high in Iodine content and foods that help the liver detoxify the body effectively. Even if the Japanese radiation scenario never directly spreads to where you live, eating these foods will help to strengthen the body against the daily radiation and electromagnetic exposures we receive from X-rays, MRIs, older computer monitors, and all the wireless devices we are exposed to.

What Should I Eat?

The following foods help support thyroid, liver and immune system health. Eating any or all of these foods is, in general, very healthful and healing. However, be aware that each persons’ metabolic needs vary. Even though it is unlikely you will have any adverse effects like upset stomach or headache, please begin with a little at a time.

Eat seaweed.  Seaweed comes in many different varieties including nori (the kind that wraps sushi), wakame, kombu, (both good to add to soups and while cooking beans and legumes), and dulse (can be quickly stir fried for potato chip like snacks). The naturally occurring Iodine in seaweeds will help protect your thyroid from radioactive uptake. These are easily available at your health food store.

Be sure to include many different kinds of fermented foods in your diet including kimchee, sauerkraut, kombucha, yogurt (homemade if possible), and kefir.  The fermentation process aids your digestive system which enhances your immune system.

Miso is fermented soybeans. Miso is traditionally added to soup broths and is full of digestive enzymes, protective soy isoflavones and fatty acids. It is something I often recommend for people undergoing radiation therapy.

Another food group that has extensively researched for their anti-cancer, radiation healing, immune enhancement, blood pressure lowering and liver protective qualities are medicinal mushrooms. These include Ganoderma (Reishi), Maitake, Shiitake mushrooms. Delicious sauteed or in soups, they can also be purchased in capsule or tincture forms.

Many herbs have been investigated for their anti-radiation and healing properties. These include ginseng, astragalus, gotu kola and ashwaganda.

Eat lots of fresh vegetables, especially those that heal and protect the liver. These include daikon radishes, artichokes, apples, burdock root, beets, carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, kale and olive oil.

To keep your immune system working at peak efficiency get plenty of rest, eat the Trinity Roots (onions, garlic and ginger) and Vitamin C rich foods.

A morning snack of almonds (soaked overnight and peeled before eating) and peppermint tea is also said to protect against effects of radiation exposure.

Practice Meditations That Increase Your Electromagnetic (Aura) Shield

Kundalini Yoga Master, Yogi Bhajan, taught us many meditations to help us through these stressful times.  Some were for the immune system, for healing, for sub-conscious cleansing, for inner peace and for handling stressful situations.

Practicing one or two these daily will, if nothing else, help you feel more centered, happier, and less a victim of the stress that surrounds us daily.

The meditations come with instructions on how long to do them. It’s always OK to practice them for shorter amounts of time until you build up the ability to do them longer. At minimum, I’d suggest 3 minutes for any of the meditations you try. Just set a timer and when it rings, finish the breath sequence or mantra (the chanting that accompanies the meditation). Finish the meditation by deeply inhaling, holding the breath for a few seconds, and exhaling, holding out the breath for a few seconds, 3 times.  Then stretch your arms up above your head and shake vigorously for 15-30 seconds. Be sure to relax for a few minutes before you get up and get going.
